Diksha Dagar wins SA Women’s Open title

This was Diksha Dagar’s fourth professional start on the tour.

Diksha Dagar became only the second Indian woman golfer to win on Ladies European Tour after clinching the R200,000 South African Open with a bogey-free 69 in the final round.

Diksha stood second entering the final round two-shot behind the three-time (2014, 2015 & 2017) tournament winner and home favourite Lee-Anne Pace. She trailed her until the 15th but caught up with her back to back birdies on the 15th and 16th holes to match Pace’s score of 5-under.

Pace lost a shot on 17th with a bogey where Dagar stayed steady with a par and had a shot advantage over Pace. As both parred the final hole the Indian won the title.

“I just went out today trying to play my normal game,” said Diksha after her win. “I really didn’t expect to win, but it happened, and I am very happy. I got two lucky breaks towards the end, with a long birdie putt on 15 and then the chip-in on 16. Normally I would just try to chip it close and make the par putt, but this time I had a feeling I could do it, and it went in.”

Before her win in South Africa, Diksha played in Australia where she tasted few excellent finishes, her best finish of T-5 came last week at the NSW Women’s Open.

The only other Indian in the field who made the cut was Millie Saroha who stood T-50 with a total score of 11-over 227 along with Maria Palacios and Vallentine Derrey. Astha Madan and Tvesa Malik were unable to qualify for the weekend.
