Indian origin stars get into U.S. Open

The Californian duo of 19-year-old Akshay Bhatia and 24-year-old Sahith Theegala won their respective qualifiers to earn starting spots in the 121st U.S. Open at Torrey Pines, San Diego from June 17-20.

Bhatia who turned pro in 2019 immediately after High School, played his U.S. Open sectional qualifier in South Carolina on June 7 and shot 65-73 (-4) over 36-holes. Bhatia has had 3 mini tour pro wins so far and one top 10 finish on the PGA Tour, where he has earned several sponsor invitations.

Whereas, Sahith Theegala, the Pepperdine grad and the winner of the Haskin Award last year, shot 71-66 (-3) at Springfield Country Club in Pennsylvania to join and later beat David Gazzolo and Ryan Brehm in a three-way playoff.

Asian Tour winner Shiv Kapur played the qualifier at Rolling Hills Country Club in California but missed the cut after shooting 69-76 (+1) for 36-holes. Anirban Lahiri was scheduled to play his qualifier at the Bear’s Club in Florida and decided to withdraw it to focus on six straight weeks of competition on the PGA Tour.
